When reading a book it is sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to notice similarities and differences among story elements such as characters, settings, plots, or even the theme.
When you compare two or more story elements, you describe ways they are alike. For example: The characters in my favorite book all work as firefighters and grew up in the same state. When you contrast two or more things, you find ways they are different. One character in my favorite book has two children, while the other has none.
